Every dog shows me something new - always keep learning.

Hi, I’m Sam, the owner and trainer at Ricochet Gundog Training, based in the GL12 area. My journey with dogs has been one of growth, discovery, and passion. With experience ranging from rehoming and boarding kennels to being a Puppy Raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind, I’ve built a deep understanding of canine behavior and training techniques.
My Journey
My first dog, Lucy—a spirited Australian Kelpie x Border Collie—was my greatest teacher. For her first four years, she was a whirlwind of energy and challenges. Traditional training methods didn’t seem to click for us, but Lucy inspired me to keep learning and trying new approaches. Lucy lived to an incredible 16.5 years, and her passing during the pandemic gave me time to reflect and dive into the modern, science-based training methods that had evolved since my early days as a dog owner.
One pivotal step in my journey was enrolling with Puppy School as an Associate Tutor. This role allowed me to explore structured curriculums and refine my skills working with dogs and their owners. However, it was an introduction to Helen Phillips at Clicker Gundog that changed everything. Her emphasis on positive reinforcement and patience opened my eyes to a completely new way of teaching dogs.Ricochet Gundog Training
Motivated by this experience and armed with new knowledge, I started Ricochet Gundog Training.
My philosophy is simple yet powerful: every dog and client is an individual, with unique needs, strengths, and learning styles. No two partnerships are the same, so training should be flexible, adaptive, and personalized to achieve the best results for both.
Whether you're working with a young puppy or refining skills with an experienced dog, I use a variety of techniques and games to ensure the training resonates with you and your dog.
My goal is to meet each client and dog where they are, helping them build confidence, communication, and a strong bond.
I currently share my life with Callisto, my 3-year-old crazy Working Cocker Spaniel. She’s a bundle of energy and enthusiasm who I work in the field, and she has taught me—and continues to teach me—so much about herself and her unique needs. Callisto inspires me daily to keep learning, growing, and adapting my methods to bring out the best in every dog I train.
Through continuing education—like completing the Gundog Training Academy's Handler’s Course and currently working toward my Teacher Training Course certification—I stay up-to-date with the latest methods and ideas. My ultimate goal is to ensure dogs and their humans thrive together.
